Like the idea of helping people while getting paid for it? Consider becoming a virtual assistant This is a job that enables you to use your organizational, administrative, technical, or creative skills to assist with a variety of tasks. Industries that often employ virtual assistants include health care, legal, government and finance, among others.“You can fit your offerings to what you know how to do,” says Stephanie Foster, a former medical transcriptionist who now operates an online resource for telecommuters.


If you have a general understanding of the markets and think you’d like to make a career out of it, you may want to consider becoming a day trader. Before you can consistently make money and quit your day job, trading with paper money is a good starting point to learn the best practices without losing income. Many people love affiliate marketing because it’s passive income that requires very little in the way of startup costs. “If you’re an influencer in your space, and you have maybe a blog or a podcast or something that people follow and look to you to promote things, then you’d be a great affiliate,” said affiliate marketer Jenny Wagner.

It’s no secret that video is now one of the most popular marketing tactics in use. In fact, YouTube is now the second-most used search engine (after Google). And today’s web users expect to see video clips on websites. So why not capitalize on this trend? Because video ads lead to higher click-through rates than banner ads, a business can potentially make a lot more money through video than through other forms of content. So, if you have a good computer and don’t mind buying some video editing software (Adobe Premiere for Windows; Final Cut Pro for Mac) and an external hard drive (video files can be huge), you can create edit business videos for fun and profit.

If you’re a people person with an entrepreneurial mindset, consider selling . . . something. There are a zillion things you sell that can potentially earn you a good amount of revenue. Whether you sell in person, via an ecommerce site or through an online marketplace like eBay, there’s excellent potential for profit. “Direct selling is scalable to your own lifestyle, ambition, and talents,” writes Laureen Miles Brunelli. “You can keep it casual and mostly sell to friends and acquaintances. Or, if you really get to networking online and in person, you can build a client base outside your existing circles.”

Whether you start with a side hustle or take a deep dive into at-home entrepreneurship, if you enjoy what you’re doing and invest the time, you can do very well.
